One question I get a lot is “How much does it cost to publish a book?” The answer is “It Depends.” Boring answer I know.

For many self-published authors there are two schools of thought, Big Hits and Rapid Release. When publishing Romance stories I would focus on Rapid Release. I wanted to get books out as fast as possible as Romance readers are insatiable. With Big Hits you’ll spend more money per book in hopes that you can sell it for more, reach more readers, and earn more per book. When doing Rapid Release you’re unable to spend as much per book.

Rapid Release Costs: For many Romance and other Rapid Release authors they will use an inexpensive premade cover, or create their own. Cost $0-$50. Editing will usually be done by themselves or they’ll have someone do a quick edit. Finally, they’ll use something like Vellum to format the book into the ePub for sales.

For Big Hits: Covers will usually be custom or more expensive, $100-$800, and usually it includes a paperback version as well. Editing will go through many passes, $1000-$3500. They’ll also use Vellum to format the book for ePub and Print sales. Advertising costs are usually higher as well.

For both as long as you’re earning more than you spend, KEEP SPENDING.

Check back in a few weeks and I’ll give you the cost breakdown of Pure Hearted.
